Since our inception in 2015, we have been working hard with our partners in Japan to provide the world with amazing tasting roe that meets the critical standards of the established market in Asia.
Our Uni
Our Uni benefit from an exquisite taste profile due to its Umami rich flavour, derived from our unique feed and ranching methodologies. This expertise is based on over 25 years of R&D development and refinement.
We consistently produce the sought-after signature kombu umami taste profile sought after by the most discerning palates. This unique salty, savory and buttery taste profile also commands the best prices globally.
Developed by food and marine scientists our dedicated feed is reflective of the natural coastal environment to ensure a consistent taste and roe yield profile. Our purpose built, scientifically tested, facilities provide the best location to nurture the growth of uni in a clean, natural, antibiotic-free environment.
Our Feed
The Urchinomics feed technology that turns empty, barren urchins into premium seafood has been in development since the early 1990s, when scientists at the Norwegian state-owned research institute Nofima first began experimenting with a formulated feed for Nordic green sea urchins.
After 25 years of research and countless millions invested in its development, Nofima succeeded in creating a formulated feed that could retain its form in sea water for 7 to 14 days and grow the roe of empty sea urchins within 12 to 14 weeks.
In 2015, Urchinomics negotiated the global rights to this unique feed technology and began improving upon it in Japan in partnership with veteran urchin fishers, biologists, feed technologists and aquaculture specialists.
In 2016, Urchinomics signed an exclusive development and production partnership agreement with Nosan Corporation, a 100% subsidiary of Mitsubishi Corporation and one of Japan's most successful feed production companies. Through this partnership, we have made further improvements on the feed technology.
Today's Urchinomics feed is:
Able to grow the roe of empty sea urchins in as short as 6 weeks
Made primarily from the offcuts of sustainably wild harvested and sea farmed kombu kelp, originally produced for human consumption
Does not contain proteins associated with rainforest deforestation (corn and soy)
Antibiotics and hormone free
Fish meal and fish oil free
GMO Free
Our Ranching Systems
Urchinomics is in partnership with multiple aquaculture systems manufacturers around the world to design the best sea and land-based ranching systems. Trials are now being conducted in Japan, Canada, USA, Norway and Australia to evaluate our new designs and their compatibility with different urchin species around the world.
