Urchinomics and EnviroStrat Announce New Partnership to Launch Urchinomics Aotearoa
Friday, May 17th 2024
Urchinomics, the leading global urchin (kina) ranching and kelp restoration company, and EnviroStrat, a renowned environmental project developer and advisory firm, are thrilled to announce their new collaboration to establish Urchinomics Aotearoa. The new business aims to address the pressing ecological and climate challenges posed by overpopulated kina barrens that have decimated kelp forest ecosystems throughout Aotearoa , New Zealand.
Urchinomics Aotearoa builds on a successful 18-month pilot led by EnviroStrat with investment from EnviroStrat, impact investors, and the Sustainable Food and Fibre Futures Fund administered by the Ministry for Primary Industries. The pilot tested technical viability, market demand, and environmental impact opportunities through kelp restoration.
Giles Cadman, Chairman of Urchinomics, expressed his enthusiasm for the new venture: "This partnership marks a significant milestone in our mission to restore vital marine ecosystems. By combining Urchinomics' innovative approach to restoring kelp forests and producing high-value kina, alongside EnviroStrat's experience leading the pilot, and their expertise in sustainable development, we are set to make a substantial impact on Aotearoa’s marine biodiversity and climate change challenges.
Perry Bevin, CEO of Urchinomics, commented on the collaboration's potential: "Working with EnviroStrat enables us to scale our efforts and leverage their deep understanding of environmental sustainability, and their relationships with iwi, stakeholders and the government in New Zealand. Together, we aim to restore ecologically degraded kina barrens into thriving habitats, providing environmental benefits and economic opportunities for iwi and local communities."
Dr. Nigel Bradly, CEO of EnviroStrat, also shared his perspective: "EnviroStrat is excited to partner with Urchinomics in this revolutionary endeavour, following our successful collaboration through the pilot over the past 18 months. Our joint expertise supports our shared vision of restored and resilient ocean ecosystems. We are committed to this partnership as a model for ecological and economic regeneration."
Urchinomics Aotearoa will focus on harvesting excessive kina (sea urchins) that have degraded kelp forests. By enhancing their condition through land-based aquaculture, we turn them into high-value kina (uni). Working with local fishers and divers, Urchinomics Aotearoa improves ocean health and creates local job opportunities.
This announcement follows the recent appointments of Mawae Morton as non-executive chair and strategic advisor, and Maru Samuels as in-country lead for Urchinomics Aotearoa. Urchinomics is expected to kickstart New Zealand operations in the coming months, with several key locations already in consideration for initial restoration activities.
