Asahi Town and Uninomics KK Launch Sea Urchin Farming Project to Combat Coastal Barrenness in Toyama Bay

Protecting the Beautiful and Bountiful Toyama Bay and Striving for a Sustainable Future

Asahi Town in Toyama Prefecture (hereinafter referred to as Asahi Town) and Uninomics KK (hereinafter referred to as Uninomics) are delighted to announce their collaboration in establishing a sea urchin ranching facility aimed at combating the loss of kelp forests and coastal biodiversity in Toyama Bay and the surrounding areas.

Addressing a Critical Environmental Challenge

In recent years, rising seawater temperatures, nutrient deficiencies, and overgrazing by sea urchins have led to a significant decline in kelp forests nationwide, including Toyama Bay. Kelp forests are crucial for fostering rich marine ecosystems, protecting biodiversity, and serve as significant sources of carbon dioxide absorption and storage (blue carbon). The restoration of kelp beds will contribute to the recovery of fishery resources and the prevention of global warming.

Innovative Solutions for a Sustainable Future

The combination of the proliferation of sea urchins and the decline in kelp forests has led to the establishment of urchin barrens. These barren areas are populated with malnourished urchins which are unable to grow the prized roe known as ‘uni’.

Uninomics uses proprietary cutting-edge technology and feed to nurture empty sea urchins in an on-land facility, allowing the urchins to develop consistently high-quality uni in a short period. Once Urchins have been removed from the area, it is possible to stimulate the re-growth of Kelp and hence, recovery of the ecosystem.

This approach not only conserves the marine environment but also revitalizes the local fishing industry and introduces new industries and specialty products to regions affected by coastal denudation.

This business model has received global acclaim, including an official endorsement by UNESCO for the United Nations Decade of Marine Science for Sustainable Development.

Collaborative Efforts for Maximum Impact

Currently, Uninomics is working closely with the Asahi Town Regional Revitalization Cooperation Troop, the Tomari Fisheries Cooperative Association, and GREENspearfisher, a general incorporated association dedicated to improving the marine environment. Together, they are investigating the coastal barrens and sea urchin habitats in the waters surrounding Toyama Prefecture, with the aim of establishing a land-based sea urchin ranching base in Asahi Town. Construction of the site is expected to commence early next year after confirming the locations and size of these barrens.
